Former policeman turned security guard fatally shot in St Catherine

Update 11:00 AM: A police source confirmed that Newton was killed in the incident.

The Den understands that a former policeman who was working as a security guard was shot in an early Wednesday morning (July 29) incident.

While details around the incident remain limited, reports are that 59-year-old Newton Bentley was working at the Innswood Village Wastewater Treatment Plant in St Catherine at around  7:00 a.m. when he was pounced upon by gunmen.

Bentley had been suspended from the Jamaica Constabulary Force for close to two decades.

Beginning in 2002, Bentley had picked up a carnal abuse charge; a charge which he was acquitted of by a jury in 2008.

However, prior to his acquittal, he picked up a second charge of perverting the course of justice after he was accused of kidnapping the complainant to prevent her from testifying against him in the same matter.

Earlier this year in March 2020, Bentley was acquitted on the charge of perverting the course of justice by the Court of Appeal.
