Severe weather alert in effect for Jamaica until Tuesday

The Meteorological Service has issued a severe weather alert for Jamaica which remains in effect until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday (September 2).

According to the Met Service, an area of low pressure associated with a strong tropical wave currently across the central Caribbean is expected to move into the vicinity of Jamaica early Tuesday morning.

Due to the predicted inclement weather, fishermen and other marine interests have been advised to exercise caution.

Satellite imagery indicates that the system has a large area of showers and thunderstorms extending across the central Caribbean.

These showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the island starting on Tuesday.

Additionally, the system could become a tropical depression during the next 48 hours as it moves westward and south of Jamaica.

As the system moves westward, projections are for cloudy conditions with periods of showers
and thunderstorms, which may be heavy at times, along with strong gusty winds to affect sections of most parishes Tuesday through to Wednesday, and lingering into Thursday.

Sea conditions will deteriorate in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms due to gusty
winds.
