US Ambassador muzzled? Johnson-Smith says Tapia’s outburst won’t recur

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith said she had spoken with US Ambassador Donald Tapia following a Twitter incident on  (October 27).

Tapia was caught in an ugly war of words with some Twitter users when he sought to clarify and defend comments he allegedly made encouraging the Jamaican government to exercise caution in the acquisition of 5G technology from Chinese firms.

Tapia’s explanation soon turned into a war of words, with the ambassador trading insults with Twitter users.

However, Johnson-Smith said she had spoken with the ambassador following the incident describing his tweets as “inappropriate”.

Johnson Smith said she was assured by the ambassador that the unfortunate incident would not happen again.

“I am aware of certain inappropriate tweets made from the twitter account of the US Ambassador which have been deleted. I have spoken with the Ambassador and he is aware that the engagement was not appropriate for a diplomatic representative. He assured me that it will not recur,” said Johnson Smith in a tweet on Thursday.
