Multiple businesses destroyed in Spanish Town blaze, fire station’s phone out of service

At least five businesses were destroyed in an early Saturday morning  (July 10) fire on Brunswick Avenue in Spanish Town, St. Catherine

Reports are that at 3:00 a.m. smoke was seen coming from a mini plaza, which contains a variety of shops including a furniture shop and grocery store.

Angry business operators say had the telephone at the fire station been working, some of their possessions may have been salvaged and the amount of damage reduced.

According to the business operators the damage is estimated  at well over $7 million JMD noting that all their possessions were lost in the blaze.

“This morning around 3:30 a.m.  I got a call that my place was on fire- that is my furniture shop- everything was destroyed, ” the distraught furniture shop owner told The Den.

“I was calling the Spanish Town no answer, a Linstead me haffi call to get some assistance,” added another business operator who blamed the slow response of the fire team for the extent of the damages.

At least one business operator is demanding answers, noting that it  is “unthinkable” that the telephone could be out of service, given the critical nature of the emergency service.
