Taxi driver nabbed in St Elizabeth six months after hitting cop in New Kingston

A taxi operator is in police custody after he was named as a person of interest in a January 23 incident in which an on-duty policeman was hit by a taxi.

A policeman was on January 23 transported to the Kingston Public Hospital after he was hit by a taxi operator he was signalling to stop at the intersection of Trafalgar Road and Worthington Avenue.

The taxi operator was arrested on July 11 in St Elizabeth,  after six months on the run.

According to police, he was arrested following a hit and run incident in the parish, he was said to be providing taxi services in St Elizabeth after he fled Kingston.

Police say, arrangements are now being made for him to be interviewed in the presence of his attorney, after which charges will be laid. 

Meanwhile, motorists are being reminded that it is an offence to disobey the lawful instructions of the Police.

Additionally, owners of taxis are being encouraged to do proper background checks on prospective drivers before employing them.
