Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens into hurricane

Tropical storm Isaias strengthened into a hurricane late Thursday (July 30) according to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC).

The storm was upgraded late Thursday after hurricane hunters found winds of 80 mph near the storm’s centre.

The now category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph brought heavy rains and winds across the Dominican Republican and Haiti and is expected to impact the southeastern Bahamas moving towards Florida on the weekend.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. update, Isaias is about 295 miles southeast of Nassau and storm conditions are expected to continue across portions of the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos.

Hurricane warnings are now in effect for the northwestern Bahamas while a tropical storm warning is in effect for Turks and Caicos Islands.

Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos are expected to get between 4 to 8 inches of rain.
