PM Holness reimposes ban on entertainment events among other changes, warns J’cans that stricter measures could follow

Speaking at a press conference on Monday (August 9) Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced several adjustments to the country’s COVID-19 containment measures.

The adjustments come as the government has confirmed that Jamaica is now in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic, evident by the latest surge in new infections.

New Curfew Times

The strategy of the government is to ease in the measures, said Holness as he announced new curfew times, as well as, a ban on entertainment events.

Beginning August 11 through to August 30, the curfew will begin at 7:00p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Monday to Friday.

On Saturdays the curfew will begin at 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. for Sundays.

No Parties or Events

Holness said that no permits would be granted for parties or events. He noted that this measure would be strictly enforced.

“Events, no small or large event,  for example, concerts, parties, round robbins will be permitted. During this period events, as I have described, will be strictly prohibited,” said Holness.

“Let me say that in terms that everyone can understand, no permits will be given for any events. And all events which are kept illegally will be closed by the police,” added Holness.

Gyms, Restaurants, Zoos, Parks and Bars

Holness said that gyms, restaurants, zoos, parks and bars, will be allowed to operate. However, these establishments, are to have a maximum of 50% of their capacity.

“Capacity is determined, as I’ve said before on the physical distance rule, one person to every 40 square feet of usable space for the area,” Holness explained.
