Hinds calls Shaw’s PFA player of the year accolade a proud moment for Jamaica

Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) spokesperson on sports, Wavell Hinds, has congratulated football player Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw on being named the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Women’s Player of the Year.

Hinds described the accolade as not just a proud moment for Shaw but also for the nation.

“This is a proud moment for Jamaica and for women’s football. Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has proven herself to be one of the best footballers in the world. Her journey from Spanish Town to the global stage is a story of perseverance, passion, and excellence,” said Hinds.

“Khadija’s achievements are a source of immense pride for our nation. She exemplifies what it means to be a true champion, both on and off the field. We celebrate her success and look forward to her continued contributions to the sport. Her accomplishments remind us of the limitless potential of our athletes, and we must continue to support and nurture their growth,” Hinds added.

Hinds also used the occasion to call on the government, private sector, and sporting bodies to step up their investment in local sports development.

“Khadija’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity. However, for every Khadija Shaw, there are many more young athletes with untapped potential. We must commit to providing the necessary resources, facilities, and support systems to cultivate our nation’s talent,” Hinds said.

Hinds noted that by investing in grassroots programmes, enhancing infrastructure, and offering scholarships and training opportunities, the next generation of athletes will be empowered to reach their full potential on the global stage.

In addition to the PFA Women’s Player of the Year award, Shaw was also honoured as the Women’s Super League Player of the Year for 2023-24 and named Player of the Year at the Women’s Football Awards.
