NWC says dam seen in viral video not one of its facilities

The National Water Commission (NWC) has said that the dam in a viral video, in which teenagers are seen playing, is not one of its facilities.

Acting Communication Manager, Delano Williams, shared that the dam seen in the video is not managed by the NWC, adding that all of its facilities are manned by security guards.

Williams also used the occasion to share that water provided by the NWC is tested daily to ensure compliance and safety for end users and consumers alike.

“Water that is taken from any source, whether it is an underground well or a spring, or in some cases a river source is taken to our NWC facility where it is treated and also checked. We do daily samples of the water supply to ensure compliance with World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health standards before it is distributed to customers,” said Williams.

“We don’t distribute ‘raw’ or untreated water. Secondly, we do monitoring of our water sources, so you will see reports about turbidity. We take daily samples of the raw water, so if there is any adverse reading, we shutdown the plant for any kind of intrusion before we even attempt treatment. And until those reading are back to normal we don’t attempt to treat or distribute,” he added.

A viral video of teens seen playing in a dam has caused concern about the safety of the island’s drinking water .

Among those who commented on the video include dancehall entertainer, Pamputtae who joked that this explained why she had began noticing ‘stuff’ in her piped water.
